BEREZINA
creation 2019

Before being the name of a defeat, Berezina was the name of a battle. In this piece by David Wampach, each dancer fights in front of the mirror. Renewing the gesture of plastic artists followers of action painting or endotism (which opposed exoticism!), it is a struggle with and against narcissism that is engaged here, through a series of metamorphoses. As if everyone, to reach their core, the light and dark part of their history, had to joyfully engage in the formation, the deformation, and the exhaustion of all their masks.

"I am particularly interested in the transformations and transitory states of the body. I question its representation in the contemporary era's aesthetic, social and political contexts: how is the body sometimes hidden, sometimes shown? A body is often tested by professional activities, sports, or even cosmetic surgery. I draw my sources from the history of entertainment, as well as from the dance repertoire. I seek to explore the body's involvement at the frontiers of genres and to exhibit the springs. For the piece BEREZINA, created in 2019 and presented at the Théâtre des 13 Vents, I wanted to thwart the obvious, as to the writing of a group piece, by choosing to isolate each dancer, in a succession of 6 soli. They are presented under the watchful eye of a group of individuals, who are sometimes witnesses, supervisors, supporters, mechanics, make-up artists, magicians."
