«Since some years I have constructed a body of work dealing with ritual and trance states. Recently I have become particularly interested in the ritual of the taranta, from the Italian region of Puglia, for two reasons: first, because it is a trance ritual; secondly, because it is a healing dance in which the community as a whole was implicated. Villagers would meet in order to accompany the healing process of the tarantolate, women afflicted by a desease attributed to a spider bite. They would gather in the village square or in front of a church, surround the tarantolate, and play la pizzica, music characterised by a wild, frantic rhythm which would provoke extreme agitation. For this piece, I want to invite the spectators to navigate between inside and outside, between an intimate space and the public space of the city.»
